Channel 29 should be tuned at 563MHz (center of the channel), just like dtvsignal says.

Possibly there's some strong local interference source at that frequency generated inside the computer?

Sounds like your frequency table is set to us-bcast and it needs to be set to us-cable.

You can't record from two sources that way with this card. You can do both analog and digital, but only if they are on the same coax.

NTSC analog cards are pretty cheap, so if you have enough PCI ...

Staudie: The nodmarestart functionality has been incorporated into the kernel. The irq loss patch is still applicable, but if you're not getting video either, you probably have a different problem.

You probably need a file in /etc/modprobe.d containing the line

options cx88_alsa index=-2

This tells the system never to put the HD-5500 in the primary sound card location.

No reason I know of it should fail on a Turion, but I've never tried anything other than an Athlon.

Next version will have 2.6.20 with the -ck changes, and they apply much more cleanly to that kern ...
