Is it possible pipe the getatsc stream straight into mencoder which will decode the stream with the XvMC extenssion and output an mpeg2 stream (and perhaps some scaling too) saving some hardrive space?

I just don't like the idea of 5MB/s strain for an hour or 2 on my hardrive.

If you have an extremely fast system, you can pipe getatsc to mencoder but it's very very unlikely mencoder will ever encode fast enough to keep up with the stream.

5 MB a second? You can only get 2 MB a second of data out of a full ATSC stream. Believe me, this is nothing to a modern hard drive. I've passed over 1.2 TB of HDTV through the cheapest USB drive I could buy and I haven't even seen a bad block yet.
