Hello,
I've been sporadically working on getting my HD-3000 working for over a year now. I've had some success at various times. I'm running Slackware 11 and kernel 2.6.20.7. Currently my problem is that I don't get any of the expected dvb devices under /dev. I found out that this is due to the cx88-dvb module not being loaded on startup. I've followed the directions in this article on penlug.org and found that when I modprobe cx88-dvb the device nodes appear. Shouldn't the hotplug system be doing this automatically? This page seems to say that it doesn't in my kernel (see Note).
So, do I need to upgrade the kernel or is there something else I can do? |

You need to add the cx88-dvb module to a config file. Where this is located in your distro, I don't know. There may be more than one config file.
They are usually found in:
/etc/modprobe.d/
or
/etc/modules.d/
Also, look for these files:
/etc/modprobe.conf
/etc/modprobe.conf.local
If you can't get the module to load at all, you may need to re-compile the kernel. This time select the DVB options. I just installed CentOS 5, and have found this to be my problem.
Now, if I only could remember how to correctly compile a kernel for DVB. |

First, it looks like the use of modprobe.conf has been deprecated as the file states that any config files should be placed in /etc/modprobe.d. But I'm confused about exactly what line I'm supposed to put in there.
I don't have an issue with placing a line for cx88-dvb in a config file I just want to make sure I understand all the issues. I thought this could be done the "right" way by making changes to my modules.pcimap if that's what would make the hotplug system load it at startup. BTW, if anyone knows where I can find some good documentation on the hotplug system, that would be helpful. The hotplug site, in my opinion, doesn't do a very good job of explaining some of the details. That's why it's been taking me a long time to get this up and running because I spend a lot of time trying to understand how things like udev and hotplug work.
