Hi,

I'm experiencing a very strange behavior with my HD-3000. It seems that whenever
video playback is happening on the system, the TV card loses the ability to tune
QAM channels reliably. It doesn't happen when tuning 8-VSB channels.

To test, I used azap to tune a QAM station, and then watch the azap output while
I start mplayer to play back some unrelated video file. The output looks like
this:

Code:
sam@kiko:~$ azap -a0 -c channels.conf-rcn -r [000-0002]
using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'
tuning to 627000000 Hz
video pid 0x0021, audio pid 0x0024

This is where I start mplayer, in this case playback of an mpeg4 file:

The hardware is a 3 GHz Pentium 4 HT on an EPoX EP-4PDA3I motherboard with an
NVidia 6100 AGP graphics card. (I can provide further specs if needed.) I'm
running Ubuntu 7.10 on it, with the proprieary nvidia driver.

Here are the variations I've tried. None have worked.

  • Different MPlayer -vo options (x11, gl, gl2, etc.)
  • Different video sources (TS, MPEG-1, etc.)
  • Totem or MythTV instead of MPlayer
  • nv driver instead of nvidia driver
  • GeForce FX 5200 instead of GeForce 6100
  • Moving the HD-3000 to a different PCI slot (it has it's own interrupt btw)
  • Different HD-3000 card
  • Tuning with MythTV instead of azap

Right now I'm pretty much out of ideas, and my next move is to buy a different
tuner card and see if that works. It seems really weird to me that this would
only affect QAM. For a while I thought it was a signal strength issue, or a SNR
issue, but the signal/SNR values are similar for 8-VSB channels. There's nothing
in the kernel log, the CPU isn't maxed out, and there's plenty of memory. Has
anyone seen this before? Does anyone have any ideas for further debugging?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
