I've got MythBuntu 8.04, Linux kernel 2.6.24-19 and I'd like to put a 5500 card in that PC.

Would be nice to hear "Yes" the driver is there.

But long term, it would be useful to know how to check some other kernel/distro to see if a given pcHDTV driver is present.

The driver was added to the kernel shortly after the HD5500 was released. I don't remember the kernel version, but any newer kernel would have it.

So yes, Mythbuntu 8.04 would have the driver, as it is fairly recent. If you want the very latest driver for any and all cards supported by Linux, get the latest drivers from the 4vl-dvb CVS repository.

http://www.linuxtv.org/repo/

First, you must install mercurial, then follow the instructions to install the CVS drivers.
