Hi all,

I'm trying to build up a new system in order to instal mythtv and I'm not having a whole lot of luck. It's an AMD Opteron and I've installed Fedora Core 3 (64-bit). I have both a HD-3000 and a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-350 installed.

I have a farily vanilla 2.6.9 kernel installed. I've ensured the following kerel parameters are enabled (statically compiled, not modules):

Processor type and features | Preemptive Kernel
Device Drivers | Multimedia devices | Video For Linux
Device Drivers | I2C support
Device Drivers | I2C support | I2c device interface

I also applied the patches in FC2-3-Kernel-2.6-pcHDTV-driver-1.5.tar.gz to the kernel and also enabled the following kernel settings:

Device Drivers | I2C support | Conexant 2388x
Device Drivers | I2C support | Conexant 2388x | ATSC support for PC-HDTV HD-3000 cards

After all the above I rebuilt the new kernel, installed it, and rebooted.
I also built the drivers in pcHDTV-1.5/driver and installed them then rebooted again.

After rebooting lspci shows:

# lspci | grep -i Conexant
01:08.0 Multimedia video controller: Conexant Winfast TV2000 XP (rev 05)
01:08.2 Multimedia controller: Conexant: Unknown device 8802 (rev 05)

However /dev/dtv, etc. that existed after I built the drivers now no longer exist. I have to run the minstall script to create them again. Also lsmod isn't showing any drivers installed. I have to do a modprobe cx8800, after which I see:

#lsmod | grep cx88
cx8800 89776 0
cx88xx 26116 1 cx8800
video_buf 27524 2 cx8800,cx88xx
i2c_algo_bit 10888 1 cx8800
v4l1_compat 13956 1 cx8800
v4l2_common 9216 1 cx8800
btcx_risc 6408 2 cx8800,cx88xx
videodev 14144 1 cx8800

If I try to run dtvscan at this point I get the following in my syslog (I've tried all the various /dev/dtvN's):

kernel: ioctl32(dtvscan:4033): Unknown cmd fd(3) cmd(c054561d){00} arg(ffffd970) on /dev/dtv

So, the $10,000 question is what am I doing wrong? I'm going to try removing the WinTV card to ensure it's not causing any sort of conflict but I'm not sure what else to try...

Thanks,

Bruce

It may be because FC3 now uses udev, a dynamic device system. I had similar problem with the nvidia drivers. The trick is to

cp -a /dev/<device> /etc/udev/devices

then on a reboot the devices will be created properly. You'll have to copy the devices over everytime you update your kernel/drivers so the latest device is in /etc/udev/devices
FC3 + Opteron + HD-3000 + WinTV PVR350 = no go...
