When I run top from SSH as I'm watching an HD station I can see that both my CPU and RAM are maxed out. Should they be?

Here is my hardware:
Mobo: ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 3200+
RAM: 512MB PC 3200 (single channel)
Video: ATI Radeon 9700 128MB

I do have hardware opengl enabled and get above 4000 fps with glxgears. The only thing I can think would be to get a 1GB dual-channel RAM kit.

Let me know what you think.

I just found these recomended requirements for playback of HDTV streams from their website:
* IntelŪ PentiumŪ 1200Mhz or higher
* NVIDIA card with IDCT acceleration for machines under 2000MHz
* Sound card (S/Pdif output required for 5.1 audio)
* 256 Meg RAM or higher

So if I have that and more, why is my video still choppy?

Well, in order to watch a 1080i mpeg2 stream, I would say that my setup just does the job, so, if you have less, you'll probably see dropped frames or a clipped image.

2.8 Ghz Pentium 4
GeForce 5700 with 256 MB of RAM
Sound card with S/PDIF
1 Gig of RAM

If the processor was any slower, then I would see dropped frames during scenes with lots of motion (ER, for example).

When I had only a 128 MB Video card, part of the video was clipped off.

I suppose less RAM would be okay, since the RAM is not max-ed out while playing video streams.

By the way, I highly recommend that you record on one machine (which doesn't need a fast processor or big video card), and playback on another machine (which does have at least a 2.8 Ghz processor and 256 MB video card.
