Hi,

As suggested in my previous post -- I am using FC5 drivers with the new mandriva 2007. By doing so, things compile. However on booting the sytem I am getting a kernel panic from the ivtv drivers.

What do I need to provide to help troubleshoot this?

More info:
Here is the panic, when I modprobe ivtv:

[root@mythtv snd]# modprobe ivtv
Segmentation fault
[root@mythtv snd]#

Why are you trying to use ivtv drivers with the HD-5500? It uses the cx88 drivers that came with the card (ivtv is for Hauppauge cards). It seems from your earlier post like you actually did compile the right drivers (as you learned, you have to use the FC5 cx88 drivers with MDV2007 2.6.17 kernel because apparently Mandriva mucked around with it), but then it seems like you're modprobing the wrong ones (ivtv).

Anyway, to get the cx88 drivers to (mostly) work under Mandriva 2007, I've had to do the following:

After you compile the drivers, do a 'make rminstall' BEFORE doing 'make install'. Otherwise, you'll be installing the *.ko modules you just built in the same directories as the *.ko.gz modules that came with the MDV kernel, and this will cause conflicts. The 'make rminstall' should remove the default *.ko.gz modules for you.

Then, I added these modules to my /etc/modprobe.preload:
cx8800
cx88-dvb
snd-hda-intel*
cx88_alsa

Then reboot.

*Note that snd-hda-intel is the sound module for my motherboard sound (I don't have a sound card). You should replace it with whatever your sound module is, so it is loaded before cx88-alsa, and remains your default sound device (/dev/dsp under OSS or hw:0,0 under ALSA). The cx88-alsa module should create /dev/dsp1 which is your HD-5500 analog (NTSC) audio capture device. I can then watch NTSC tv on /dev/video0 with "xawtv -nodga" and listen to the sound using "sox -t ossdsp -w -c2 -r 48000 /dev/dsp1 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp" (I had to urpmi sox; I'm sure you could do this with mplayer as well somehow).

I couldn't get the xine-hd to compile, but I can see HDTV stations in mythtv, and the sound is fine (though I can't use passthrough yet). As you saw in my post to the myth-users list, though, I still can't get the NTSC sound working through myth. It sounds awful, like a compressed audio stream...

Anyway, no guarantees, but the above recipe has worked for me, mostly.

Thanks for the reply,

I have a pvr-500 along with my 5500 and that's why the ivtv drivers are being loaded. I will have to look at that interaction more closely...

Hi, I eventually had the same problem as you. I upgraded to the 2.6.18.1 kernel from kernel.org and installed ivtv-0.8.0 and my PVR350 and HD5500s now both work! Two other problems-- I had to download lirc-0.8.1pre2 to get it to compile with the new kernel, and before compiling the kernel, I had to apply the patches in http://www.pchdtv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1466&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15
One of the patches failed and had to be applied "manually". Before the patches, I would lose audio on the HD-5500 NTSC tuner.
Now everything works! (except ac3 passthrough, my next challenge)
