xine-hd: no input plugin available to handle dvb://

After compilation failed miserably over and over on ubuntu AMD64, I moved over to FC5 which was much easier. Everything seemed to compile and install correctly. However, I'm now stuck with a weird xine-hd error. I have created a channels.atsc file (and a channels.conf file -- it's not clear from the instructions which is needed) and the local station I want is in the file. When I start xine-hd and click on "DVB" in the gui window as the instructions say, a window pops up to tell me "there is no plugin available to handle dvb://WKYT-HD".

lsmod shows the cx88 modules loaded. I have restarted the machine several times, so the correct modules should be loaded. Is it a xine plugin or pchdtv plugin I'm missing. Where do I get it/get my machine to recognize it? Is it an .so file somewhere I need to add to /etc/ld.so.conf? Not sure what to do now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What version of xine-lib do you have? There is a xine patch for xine-lib to let it handle 8VSB for ATSC stations you might need to apply. I've had good success just grabbing the latest xine and xine-lib, applying the patch (it's in extras on the download page I believe) and building. The only difference I could see is I don't have the VCR looking skin and no kludged channel up/down buttons. I don't miss them.

HTH,

I seem to be having a very similar problem on my SuSE10.1 on a x86_64 after compiling the drivers.
However I was able to pinpoint it more precisely.
I am using:
Code:
lex:~ # xine --version
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.4cvs.
lex:~ # rpm --query xine-lib
xine-lib-1.1.1-24.6

I was able to:
Code:
lex:~/pcHDTV # dtvscan --version
dtvscan ver 1.0.3 - by Jack Kelliher (c) 2002,2005,2006
lex:~ # dtvscan -d 0 -fx -o channels.conf
lex:~/pcHDTV # cat channels.conf
KUSI-DT:497000000:8VSB:0x31:0x34:0x03
KGTV-DT:539000000:8VSB:0x31:0x34:0x03
KPBS-HD:569000000:8VSB:0x31:0x34:0x03
CREATE_:569000000:8VSB:0x41:0x44:0x04
UpdaTV1:569000000:8VSB:0x91:0x94:0x09
UpdaTV2:569000000:8VSB:0xa1:0xa4:0x0a
KNSD HD:629000000:8VSB:0x31:0x34:0x03
WX Plus:629000000:8VSB:0x41:0x44:0x04

However, when I run xine, somehow it does not like the channel list format...?
Code:
lex:~ # xine --bug-report dvb://
*** NOTE ***
Bug Report mode: All output messages will be added in BUG-REPORT.TXT file.
lex:~ # less BUG-REPORT.TXT
...
xine: found input plugin  : DVB (Digital TV) input plugin

rdware decoder
input_dvb: expecting 8 channels...
input_dvb: found 8 channels...
input_dvb: invalid channel specification, defaulting to last viewed channel.
input_dvb: tuner_set_channel failed
xine: input plugin cannot open MRL [dvb://]

net_buf_ctrl: nbc_close

net_buf_ctrl: nbc_close: done
xine: cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvb://]

got XINE_ERROR_NO_INPUT_PLUGIN.
------------------ (END OF ERROR) -------------------

---------------------- (ERROR) ----------------------
- xine engine error -

There is no input plugin available to handle 'dvb://'.
Maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist.
------------------ (END OF ERROR) -------------------

And if I specify a particular channel, everything is as above, only the error is slightly different:
Code:
lex:~ # xine --bug-report dvb://KPBS-HD
...
input_dvb: searching for channel KPBS-HD
input_dvb: tuner_set_channel failed
xine: input plugin cannot open MRL [dvb://KPBS-HD]

Could it be that the patch for 8VSB is not included in (the latest) xine-lib-1.1.1 which I installed (along with xine-ui) as a rpm from Packman?
Or maybe there is something else wrong?

Any help appreciated.

My guess would be that the 8VSB patch needs to be applied. You can get it from the downloads page in the extras tarball.

Unfortunately, this does not work.
Suggestions?

I got the same error as the other guy when trying to patch the xline-hd-lib package from the pchdtv website.

I did, however get the patch to work on the xine-lib sources from xinehq.de. Compilation crapped out, though.

I tried making some dirty hacks to the problematic file, but without success.

So basically, the only way I can get HD medi a is with getatsc for now. Mythtv doesn't work, xine doesn't work... this is frustrating, to say the least.

Did you run ./configure before trying to make the xine-lib?

Um... yes. And I assume you're talking about the xine-lib from the xine page, not the xine-hd stuff from pcHDTV because the latter didn't even patch correctly.

If this were a normal linux program forum, I would never say this, but considering all the claims of "support" by pcHDTV (both linux and mythtv support for the 5500 are suspect at best) and the fact that we paid good money for these cards, I want to say this: I'm pretty disappointed by the promptness, thoroughness and general knowledge level of support from pcHDTV.

Asking whether or not I configured a package before making it hardly qualifies as support. That's something we all learned on day 1 of our open source lives.

mythtv works, xine-hd doesn't

I have finally gotten DVB tv working in mythtv. Xine-hd is still a mystery to me, but I figured I'd share my recipe for success for the 5500 here.

1. Download the v4l-dvb HD 5500 driver package from pchdtv and install it.
2. Use dtvscan and dtvsignal from the dvb-atsc-tools package from pchdtv.com to make sure it is working correctly.
3. Use "getatsc -dvb 0 XX | mplayer -" to watch a DVB video stream where XX is a channel you have good reception on. Using "-cache 8192" with mplayer helps with playback.
4a. Install mythtv from svn source. There are several fixes since the 0.19 release that you will need. (For me, the database connection would time out under 0.19. I understand there are several other fixes, as well.) I would resist the RPM packages. You need to specify a build with "--enable-dvb" (See next step) and I"m not sure how to do that with the RPMs (if it's even possible).
4b. Install mythtv (there are good howtos out there) but make sure you configure with "--enable-dvb and --dvb-path=" where dvb-path points to your v4l-dvb 5500 driver directory where linux/dvb/frontend.h is. Use "locate dvb/frontend.h" to find the correct location. It is NOT your kernel source tree because you want MythTV to build with the driver from pcHDTV so that the 5500 is supported. For me, the correct path was /usr/local/v4l-dvb/linux/include because I installed v4l-dvb in /usr/local.
5. In mythtv-setup, don't get fooled by the pcHDTV choice in the capture cards section. THIS IS AN ANALOG DRIVER. You want to choose the DVB option for digital reception. I was able to scan for and find the channels in my area with ease... I don't think there is any need to download your schedule from zap2it. I could be wrong, though. In any case, your scan should work.

If, when choosing the DVB driver in mythtv, you get an error message that says "can't find proper configuration for card #0" or if when trying to scan for channels it says "failed to probe card" then you have chosen the wrong frontend.h location in the mythtv configuration step. Go back, reconfigure mythtv and use the right one.

In any case, I suggest skipping the xine-hd setup.

my system: AMD 64 X2 3800, FC5, 1GB memory

If you're still using Fedora Core 5, did you try using ATRPMS as your source for MythTV?
Axel is pretty good at keeping things up to date.

I had the same problem until I downloaded and installed the extras
package. I think it was the modfix that got it working.

Well a careful examination of the patch error (at least the one posted here) shows that xine-hd-lib already had the patch applied.

I' m sorry you feel that way. Your errors in compiling xine-lib (which when I say xine-lib I mean xine-lib not xine-hd-lib, because I would say xine-hd-lib in that case) were in video_out_xxmc which has nothing to do with any files patched or touched by pcHDTV from xinehq. It has something to do with your video card configuration and those types of questions are usually answered by running ./configure and looking for problems in the output.

Did you in fact have any problems with the HD5500? Did you contact support@pchdtv.com with a request for support? Forums are just that; forums. I am a part time helper for pcHDTV a few nights a week to keep people from falling through the cracks here. All major issues with what you bought, should be addressed through support@pcHDTV.com

For a number of people on this forum, this IS the first day of their open-source life. I'm sorry if you felt offended.

I did, however get the patch to work on the xine-lib sources from xinehq.de. Compilation crapped out, though.

video_out_xxmc.c:47: error: expected ')' before '*' token

video_out_xxmc.c:60: error: 'XINE_XVMC_ACCEL_MOCOMP' undeclared here (not in a function)

I fixed my compilation problem with this modification
./configure --with-xv-path=/usr/lib

But I still cant get "xine -C 54.1 dvb://" to work.
It will play from a file "xine -C 10.1 testmore.ts"
or "getatsc -dvb 0 58 | xine -C 10.2 stdin://"
but not directly

DVB:// invalid MRL problem

I have exactly the same problem running xine-hd as the "sds" did. I get the error that dvb:// is not a valid MRL because it can't find a plugin for it, and the BUG_REPORT file shows the same problem -- that it finds the DVB plugin but cannot handle the channel file format.

I know sds handled it by installing mythtv -- while I plan to do that, I'd like to get Xine working as well.

Did you create a channels.conf file for xine? if so could you post it?
