Before anyone asks why run linux on PowerPC64 ask Linus Torvalds why he does. Moving on.

Hardware: My G5 has curious pci slots. They're 64bit long, but only 33MHz. (not 5v at all) I made sure the keying was right before I purchased my card.

Software: I'm using Open SuSE 10.1 (aka 64bit), and I compiled mythtv from SRPMS using --target=ppc (aka 32bit) just so I'd not run into any 64bitness problems. I also made the atsc tools. I dropped the firmware files from the cd under /lib/firmware/ as well after building the v4l-dvb.

Here was the plan, I wanted to swap out my older (working) haupauge wintv with this new card. It needs ntsc so I can pull in the cabletv. I setup mythtv to look for /dev/video0 for this reason. I plugged the audio cable in as the instructions detailed. (dongle >> line-in)

I do get digital channels, (worldcup HD on my eyetv500 was inspiring) but I'll mess with HD later.

I get nothing from all this planning. myth comes up, the db works. No soap boss. If you need details I can fetch you what you need, but I suspect it might be the firmware files? Do they need to be assembled for powerpc 32/64? (software/kernel) Please devs shine down on me? =)

What card do you have? The HD-5500, since the HD-3000 needs 5V slots?

What does dmesg say about the drivers being installed?

The HD5500 doesn't need the firmware files, they are only for the HD3000 and the HD2000.

I rm'd the firmware files; I stopped both mysqld, and mythbackend. Oh, and I unplugged the back cable since mine has the "audio port" eeprom. This is dmesg |grep cx88 on a fresh reboot:

OK it looks like everything loaded fine. What are your permissions on /dev/video0 and /dev/dvb/adapter0/*? Perhaps mythtv can't access the device because of the permissions. The dmesg reports that the device is /dev/video0 so setting myth to use that device should be all you need to see NTSC std TV. It also looks like the audio drive loaded as well so from a driver standpoint it should be good to go.

That's good. I'll check the perms later today, and post them here. When I scan using mythtv-setup nothing shows up at all.

Here's a question? Ideally (once this works) can I use both devices? I mean, can I do the mythtv-setup for both HD/atsc (dvb) & SD/ntsc (video0) then change inputs from mythtv? (I don't mean both at the same time) Or do I need to reconfigure the drivers for dvb, and run mythtv-setup again later to try out HD?

You should be able to setup an input for NTSC and an input for ATSC and be able to switch between them. As to how well that works I can't say, but I know it's supposed to work that way. As for the driver space, NTSC and ATSC show up as separate output devices from the card so in theory accessing the two sides of the card is no different than accessing two separate cards (except for the independence). The drivers are loaded at the same time.

I can't say for sure (because I'm not running myth) but it looks like the "Unknown command" responses go away halfway through. I know the linuxtv.org guys are phasing out the V4L1 API and going to strict V4L2 API calls and that may be causing the observed behavior. Once the system stops reporting the calls as unknown, I would expect things to just work.

Have you tried verifying the card works using tvtime or some other tv viewer on /dev/video0? I have done a SuSE distro before, but I don't remember what programs it typically comes with. Have you tried the DVB tools to see if you can scan for digital signals or see digital signal levels on your HD channels? The next step is to identify is the issue in the card or in myth.

external prog: No, I have not yet. update: tvtime did not go well. neither did kdetv.

"cx8800 invalid argument
cannot open capture device /dev/video0."

dvb tools: I don't wanna mess w/ HD yet as there are all of 4 channels here, and I have eyetv500 (mac) for that if I feel the need for HD. update: It's official we use qam-256, and the cx88-dvb driver works as is.

I know myth well. I have a working known system to compare with that has my wintv card in it. This is not a mythtv problem. I honestly doubt it's a card problem either. I'm betting this is either fine tuning (pun) needed in the NTSC part of the drivers, or something else. Like I said if you have a test you'd like me to try to get my NTSC working, I'll be thrilled to run it.
