I have a spare AMD64 I intend for a set-top box using KnoppMyth. Perhaps before I do that I'll try installing Ubuntu-AMD64 and let you know. Might be a while. |

I have a pchdtv 5500 setup with an x86_64 FC5 based mythbox. NTSC and ATSC both work fine.
Some key points:
1. Either use the hd5500 dvb drivers on the cd or pull the latest from the v4l/dvb site. NOTE: You must install the dvb driver and not the old v4l driver.
2. You must use the svn mythtv - This is needed so that you can use both the ATSC and NTSC tuner within mythtv. See this myth ticket:
http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/1133
3. Set the dvb_shutdown_timeout = 0 for the dvb_frontend kernel module - This is crucial. Otherwise, when you flip from an ATSC channel to an NTSC channel the turner in mythtv the screen goes blank, the mythbackend crashes, and the kernel spews a bunch of dma timeout errors. Well, this happended for me and turning off the timeout parameter seemed to fixed this. |

tvtime in NTSC works for me in 64 bit Gentoo. Kernel 2.6.15 with drivers from CDROM. |

This is exactly the problem I am dealing with. How/where do you set dvb_shutdown_timeout = 0? |

I found it in this file:
/usr/src/linux-2.6.16.21-0.13/drivers/media/dvb/dvb-core/dvb_frontend.c
This is from a SuSE install.
I think if you change it here, you'll have to recompile the kernel.

You usually set your module options in /etc/modprobe.conf
Try /sbin/modinfo dvb-core to see the options for the dvb-core module. |

I have a working mythtv setup with NTSC through S-Video on my amd64 box: here's the details
Gentoo 2006.1
gentoo-sources-2.6.17-r4 (with an extra patch for my scorpus wireless keyboard)
I compiled and installed the pcHDTV 5500 driver from the website
I use the DVB driver for HDTV reception of the air, (it's flawless)
I use a generic v4l driver for the svideo (the mythtv driver setting for the pcHDTV v4l does not work)
My only quirk is that the contrast and colors and everything are way off with default mythtv settings, and I've had to play with it a lot on my channels (I'm still not happy with it, but I've gotten it to the 'acceptable" range of look). I suspect if I could use the v4l drivers specific for the pcHDTV card, that it might interpret the signals from the svideo cable more correctly without all the manual tweaking. |

It's good to see people are working out what's actually wrong with the 64bit drivers/mythtv. I've not even gotten back in so far as getting mythtv working again.
All of my AMD64s run xenolinux, and they don't seem to play nice here. I hosed my PPC64 default kernel last time building all sorts of driver versions. I'm happy now to wait, and see how this all works out. I have custom builds of all the mythtv packages, and other stuff. Now I'm just waiting on the 64bit drivers to stablize.

As a newbe, I have been able to get my system installed and running, but I have this problem as well. So can you give me more guidance about how to make this change? |

I think to get a temporary change, you can use modprobe:
Code: | modprobe dvb-core dvb_shutdown_timeout=0 |
And to get a permanent change, you can edit /etc/modules.conf:
Code: | options dvb-core dvb_shutdown_timeout=0 |
You might want to double check the man pages to be sure:
Code: | man modprobe
man modprobe.conf |

seems like people have given up on trying to fix NTSC on these cards? |
If by "giving up" you mean "have gotten working successfully", yes.
I have two AMD-64 MythTV systems each doing NTSC and QAM or 8VSB. One is running a 64-bit kernel, the other a 32-bit kernel. Several driver patches were required to get analog sound working reliably, and the timeout parameter mentioned earlier in the thread had to be fixed. |

I started with Ubuntu 6.06 for AMD64. I got the source for that kernel. I then built and installed the 20060617 snapshot of the linuxtv drivers from http://www.linuxtv.org/downloads/snapshots/. I added the shutdown fix as a file in /etc/modprobe.d. That was enough to get the card working aside from analog sound.
This is the PC-5500 BTW; that's the only card I have, though I have a KWorld ATSC-110 on order (I'm curious to see how it compares) |
