I have an RPTV with native 1080i resolution.

In all the programs I've tried (xine, mplayer, mythtv), if I don't use deinterlacing then the picture looks like garbage, particularly during motion.

It seems like deinterlacing the signal and then having the video card re-interlace is wastefull and lossy. So, is it possible to play 1080i content and it display properly with no jaggies without using software deinterlacing?

Are you sure your video card is set up in X for interlaced 1920x1080 video? Your display should be doing its own deinterlacing if it's receiving an interlaced signal.

It could be that its deinterlacing isn't very good. My older Aquos LCD display doesn't have very good deinterlacing at all.
