I have a very simple question that I'm surprised isn't answered in a FAQ that I can find. Is it possible to use

MythTV + HD-5500 +DirecTV

to record HDTV? I'm sure the answer is no. If so, that's pretty sad.

Thanks!

Amazing. Not a single reply. I would think that using MythTV to record HDTV from a DirecTV service would something that more than one person reading these forums would want to do. I would also think that a pcHDTV rep would chime in with an answer. Weird...

The pcHDTV cards are meant to be used as tuners. Your DirecTV box is also used as a tuner (although it is a different kind of tuner).

The pcHDTV cards can "tune" Over the Air (OTA) transmissions and cable transmission (QAM 64?), but not the signal beamed by a DirecTV satellite to a DirecTV dish.

It sounds like what you want to do is connect the HD output from your DirecTV box into the pcHDTV card. That is not how the pcHDTV is meant to be used. The big problem is, I don't think there is a HD video out from your DirecTV box (except for the video cable meant to connect to your TV), so there is no way to get an HD signal from your DirecTV tuner to a PC (that would be by design).

If you have DirectTV (I have DishNetwork) then the formula you'll want to use is:

MythTV + HD-5500 + Antenna = HD on your PC
