Some tips for getting the pchdtv 5500 card to work with gentoo.

1) The DVB drivers are part of the gentoo-sources kernel from 2.6.18+. I tried the 2.6.20 kernel (currently marked as unstable ~x86), but it compiled and recognized the card with no issues. When building the kernel, I selected all the v4l and DVB options as modules. make sure that you select the "dvb core" option first, and then go back to the v4l option and select the dvb option for the cx88 drivers. It won't appear in menuconfig until you first select the dvb-core option.

2) The /dev/video and /devdvb devices should apear when you reboot. You can verify that you the card is installed by using "lspci -v" and you should see the 4 pci devices that the 5500 enable.

3) the xine-hd source provided on the cd and from the pchdtv site (the Fedora version) need a config option to compile cleanly. just run:

./configure -with-xv-path=/usr/lib
make

appears to work fine with the gcc-4.1 compiler. some posts have suggested using the gcc-3.4 compiler, but I didn't need to do this.

4) mplayer can be used to display the hdtv or ntsc output.

I have been working with the 2.6.20 kernel since it came out and it seems fine. I would be interested in what your .configure file looks like in /usr/src/linux.

Thanks for the tip on the xine-hd version. I have been using the 0.99.5 out of portage. What is different where I need to use the xine-hd version.

mythtv appears to be working for me but I am not complete with full testing. The basic playback, recording, etc. working.

What I need to work on is the antenna, preamp, etc. to get better signal. Now at least I see a signal value and not just SNR. Although with 2.6.20 I am not sure the SNR is being reported.

I posted some misleading info.

I was able to compile the libxine-hd with the instructions above, but the libxine-ui failed. I think was this due to not installing the libxine-hd (I still have the gentoo xine version installed). Need further testing to try it. However, I was able to get mplayer to display hdtv channels, so I was ok for now.

For the configs, here is my kernel .config file (for v4l and dvb devices):

I am trying to get the 5500 to work with kernel 2.6.20-gentoo-r8 and I can not select hardly any options for dvb cards in the v4l section of menuconfig. Are you using the Gentoo or the vanilla sources?
