pcHDTV 5500 errors

I had this exact same setup working under Gentoo, but recently rebuilt it with Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy (in an effort to get some hardware/software working that I hadn't ever bothered to before) and now I can't get my pcHDTV card to work.

It's running on a 2.6.17 kernel, and from what I've read a lot of people have just been able to download the v4l-dvb drivers from the pcHDTV website and everything worked, but it didn't for me.

When I do a dtvsignal, I get:
Quote:
using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'
ERROR: failed opening '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' (No such file or directory)
dtvsignal ver 1.0.4 - by Jack Kelliher (c) 2002,2005,2006
channel = 19 freq = 503000000Hz
30db 0% 25% 50% 75% 100%
Signal: | . : . | ._____:_____._____|
Signal: 087 $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Which is very confusing to me, because although it's not able to find the device files, it's still recognizing the card at some level because it's getting a signal. Since the install is using udev, it seems like it's not setting something up properly.

and then when I try to modprode cx88_dvb I get:
Quote:
WARNING: Error inserting cx88xx (/lib/modules/2.6.17-11-generic/kernel/drivers/media/video/cx88/cx88xx.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error inserting cx8802 (/lib/modules/2.6.17-11-generic/kernel/drivers/media/video/cx88/cx8802.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting cx88_dvb (/lib/modules/2.6.17-11-generic/kernel/drivers/media/video/cx88/cx88-dvb.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

and 'dmesg |grep cx88' gives me a whole mess of 'Unknown Symbol' errors starting with:
Quote:

I don't remember having this many problems the first time, I'm pretty sure it just worked. However, getting my PVR-500 working was a real pain, which was trivial this time, go figure.

If the driver isn't loaded, then I don't see how dtvsignal could possibly work. Maybe it's just displaying random numbers. Does unplugging the cable have any effect on the numbers?

There is your problem. You've specified an unknown parameter for cx88xx. Check your /etc/modules.conf file.

That's what I thought, I was very confused.

In any case, I was able to get the card working last night. After I rebooted using my Live CD, I noticed that the modules were all loaded just fine, so I went ahead and rebuilt the whole system. Once I did that, I still didn't have any /dev/dvb device files which frustrated me for a while until I noticed that in my dmesg, the cx88 modules were complaining that they couldn't determine what type of card I had (the 5500 is listed as 47, and the list it showed me only had up to 46), so I downloaded and installed the drivers from the website and rebooted and everything worked properly.

Somehow I must have done something to break the modules the first time around.
