I looked at Media Portal's supported card file, and the HD-5500 in not "officially" supported.

I see that there are BDA drivers on the HD-5500 CD. With these installed you should be able to use this card with Windows Media Center Edition and/or Beyond TV 4. No further setup should be needed, other that setting it up in the specific application.

If you want to use it in the current release of Media Portal (0.2.1.0) you will have to configure it so that it will recognize your card. I can help you with this, if needed. We would be better off taking that discussion to the Media Portal forums. There also are more knowledgable MP users there to help.

Windows drivers installed fine, and then right after that VirtualDub almost worked. But then after a restart, I always get the error that something else is using the device, and I'm stuck on that right now. I'd love to capture straight to Xvid + mp3 or ac3.

I'm not sure what your trying to do with Virtual Dub. But, if your using Media Portal with the HD5500, you should be capturing HDTV signals. With MP these are saved as dvr-ms type files. This is just a wrapper for the MPEG-2 stream, and that is recorded with no changes.

I use VideoReDo+ (not free) to remove commercials, and a new Dr DivX (free) to transcode the file.

If you are talking about the analog side of the card, I can't help. I feel that it is a waste of a HD card to use it like that.

Also, I believe that the windows drivers provided for the HD5500 are for the digital side of the card (BDA). I don't know if it has the analog drivers (WDM)

I, too am trying MediaPortal with the 5500.

I installed the Windows XP drivers and I'm getting an error on one of the devices on the card. It will not install no matter what I do.

When I look in the Device Manager I see a list of everything that is installed and one part that has a yellow question mark with a title of "Multimedia Controller".

Here is what is installed according to Device Manager:

Under Human Interface Devices:
HID-compliant consumer control device
HID-compliant device
PVDA408 IR Decoder (ATSC/NTSC)

Under Keyboards:
HID Keyboard Device
Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard

Under Other devices:
Multimedia Controller (yellow question mark)

Under Sound, video and game controllers:
Audio Codecs
Creative SB Live! Series (WDM)
Creative SBLive! Gameport
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
PVDA408 AVStream Crossbar
PVDA408 AVStream TS Capture (ATSC)
PVDA408 BDA ATSC Tuner/Demod (LG DT3303)
PVDA408 Tuner (LG TDVS H064F NTSC)
PVDA408 Video Capture (ATSC)
Video Codecs

I'd like to know what is missing, if anybody knows.

I've searched the MediaPortal forums with no luck.

Once I get this straightened out, I'd like to get it setup in MediaPortal. Right now it says there are no tuners installed.

Any help would be appreciated.

-Tim

My system is:
ABIT Socket A MB w/AMD 1900+
512MB
300GB EIDE HD
3COM 10/100 Network card
SoundBlaster Live! Sound card
ATI 9500 Pro Video card

I had this system working with MythTV recording and playing back HD 1080i with the 5500 (except for the ATI card, I installed an nVidia 7800)

It looks to me that the missing piece is an audio filter for NTSC.

For ATSC you need these filters:

PVDA408 BDA ATSC Tuner/Demod (LG DT3303)
PVDA408 AVStream TS Capture (ATSC)
or
PVDA408 Video Capture (ATSC)

The reason that Media Portal cannot see your card, is because no one has submitted the configuration for it to the devs. You can be the first one.

You should start a new thread at the MP forum, with the card name in the thread title (pcHDTV HD-5500). I have helped many people set up cards for MP, post there and I'll help you out too.

Thanks waterhead!

I posted at the MP forum here:
http://forum.team-mediaportal.com/showthread.php?t=14693

It pretty much says the same thing as my post here. I would very much like to get this working! Once I do so, I'll post a new thread detailing how it was done both here and on MP.

Has anyone been able to get the 5500 to work in the standard windows media center app? Following the link in the above posts and following the instructions there, I was able to get my card recognized in Media portal and view and record in that app. However, I ran into some issues when trying to use two cards simultaneously from that program, so I'm still investigating other options. When I try to use the built in windows media center edition program, it fails to find any tuner cards.

Is there some setup step that I'm missing (beyond installing the drivers from the CD that was necessary in the Media portal case)?

In WMCE you need to have a separate NTSC (analog) card installed before it will recognize a ATSC (digital) card. This is a quirk that I heard was removed in the Vista Media Center.

You need a separate analog tuner, the one on the HD-5500 will not work for this. I have a Hauppauge PVR-250 installed for this. I rarely use it, because analog TV is very poor compared to digital.

I actually am not even using the Media Center program at all on that PC. I disabled it to use BeyondTV4.
