MythTV 0.2

I just rebuilt my system with SuSE 10.1 and the new MythTV build 0.2 . It is available on the packman repository. I installed it using the Smart package manager.

I originally installed v0.19 two days ago. When I upgraded to v0.20, I got an error from the database that it could not do a schema upgrade. Since this installation was only one day old, I deleted the database and recreated it. No problems.

This version of MythTV has the capabilities to use both the analog and digital tuners on my pcHDTV-3000 card. It shows as a V4L card, but when I scan for channels I get nothing.

Does anyone have this working? Do I have to load the drivers first?

I should clarify the situation.

I have the ATSC tuner of the pcHDTV-3000 card working with the cx88_dvb driver. I have to modprobe it after a reboot, as I have yet to figure out how to get it to load at boot.

What I'm trying to figure out is how to setup the analog side of this card, to use in mythtv.

Paul

Make sure you have the cx8800 module loaded for the analog video side.

I can help with that. I have SUSE 10.1 running with MythTV 0.19. I went through a lengthy process to figure out what SUSE wanted to get the right things loaded. On my system, there are files in the /etc/sysconfig/hardware directory:

hwcfg-bus-pci-0000:05:0a.2
hwcfg-bus-pci-0000:05:09.2

The files cause the static hardware devices to be initialized at system boot. For my cards I use:
Quote:

# jN9z.Vq0qy9bK0M8:pcHDTV HD-3000
MODULE='cx88-dvb'
#MODULE_OPTIONS='debug=1'
STARTMODE='auto'

This was not set up with YaST directly. This seems to be the only thing, besides putting the firmware in the correct location, that is required to get the drivers properly working. There does not appear to be a DVB subsystem startup in SUSE anymore, so this is the only reliable way I found to do the module loading -- there may be others. You could also put something in /etc/modprobe.d. I located the hardware by using lspci:
Quote:

# lspci -v

Your bus information will be different from mine. You can set up the card hardware using YaST and rip out all but the /etc/sysconfig/hardware files, which is what I did. YaST does not seem to properly detect the cards (at least not on 10.0) and set them up, so I did it the semi-manual way. I blindly carried everything forward to 10.1 when I upgraded, so there might be better ways to do this.

I have ATSC working, but not the NTSC side of things. I am going to try the suggestion about the cx8800 module from Rusty. (just checked with lsmod and I have cx8800 loaded, it is probably a dependency of the cx88_dvb module). Must be a MythTV issue with NTSC. The ATSC side of things is GORGEOUS and works great with all of the Myth RPMs for SUSE from http://folk.uio.no/oeysteio/apt/suse/

Thanks for the info.

I tried to auto load the cx88-dvb driver by following a suggestion from another site. They recommended adding a line to your /etc/modprobe.conf.local file:
Code:
alias char-major-81-0 cx88-dvb

That didn't work, so I added it to some other modprobe files, no good either. I'll try your method next.

As for the analog tuner. Like you, I already had the cx8800 module loaded. In fact I watched TV with the tuner using kdetv, before installing MythTV. Now if I use kdetv, the picture cuts out after a second. I noticed the same thing happened when I ran MythTV 0.19 under Fedora Core 5. MythTV must control the card or something.

As for MythTV rpms for SuSE. I've used the Oystein repository in the past. But, there is a message on the site saying that he will no longer create MythTV rpms, and to get them from the packman site.

cx8800 isn't a dependency of cx88_dvb. You can have one or the other loaded, or both at once. cx8800 is the driver for analog.

You can not use the analog tuner while the DVB device is open, like say myth has it open. Capturing analog with s-video or composite is ok, but not the tuner. There is another thread here that deals with this issue.

There is an option, when setting up the dvb card, to only open the card on demand. I believe that this is to free it up for other uses. I have this option checked, and the analog side won't work.

Clearly, there is more to setting it up, so that both tuners are available.

I have a 5500, but mythtv setup should be similar. You don't set it up as a v4l card; you set it up as a DVB card. On the screen for the DVB card should be a button labeled "Analog Options". Click that and you get the analog setup. If you don't get "Analog Options", you've probably got driver issues.

You don't need the "open dvb card on demand" option in this case.

Thanks, the analog options won't appear until the dvb driver is loaded. And in my case, that means modprobing it.

It still won't scan for channels. If you chose dvb for the tuner, it only has ATSC as an option. If you chose V4L, it does not find any channels (this is in the analog options selection).

It's not that big of a deal, I just heard that it now could be done with MythTV 0.20, so I thought that I'd try it out.

Thanks for the input anyways.

Loading cx88_dvb on boot w/SuSE 10.1

I have figured an easier way to load the cx88_dvb module at boot time, in SuSE 10.1

In Yast open System --->/etc/sysconfig Editor
Then System-->kernel-->MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT

Add cx88_dvb to the line. It's that simple!

It has loaded after one test reboot.

I learned of this method after configuring ndiswrapper to load, for the wlan driver on my laptop. It works on ndiswrapper everytime.
