No audio, HD3000 and MythTV - this ought to be a FAQ

I've read more posts in more forums than I can remember, and tried LOTS of things. Currently, I'm running MythTV and can see and capture analog video from Comcast. However, I have no audio.

In mythfrontend, I selected "Utilities/Setup":Setup:General
and cycled through until I reached the audio page. On audio I set:
Audo Output Device: ALSA:default
Use Internal Controls: on
Mixer Device: default
Mixer Controls: Master

When I select "Watch TV" from the main menu, I get video, but no audio.

The console reports:

Opening audio device 'default'
Using XV port 53
Video timing method: USleep with busy wait
Using realtime priority
Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV

Mplayer plays music nicely so I know that audio works, but I still don't understand how the audio is supposed to be passed from device to device (and can't find anything that describes it, either).

How do I start debugging this?

Since ALSA is working, how do I ensure that the audio from my HD3000 is going into the ALSA mixer? Should I be using ALSA? Is there a better way?

Thank you in advance,
X
